
The Interceptor Coalescer operates on Direct Interception, using fine wire filaments or co-knit media to capture dispersed droplets as they travel in laminar flow streamlines around each element. Unlike Stokes Settling devices, Direct Interception captures smaller droplets, making it effective for stable or fine emulsions where gravity settling alone is insufficient. Finer media allow separation of finer droplets and more stable emulsions but also capture fine solid particulates, requiring an upstream strainer in services where solids are present. Direct Interception captures droplets by positioning fine filaments in the flow path so droplets contact the media surface rather than settling by gravity. It captures finer droplets than Stokes Settling devices and is specified for stable emulsions where droplet size is too small for gravity or plate pack separation. The fine media geometry that enables fine droplet capture also intercepts fine solid particulates from the process stream. Without an upstream strainer, solids accumulate on the coalescer media and reduce its effective open area over time, shortening run length and degrading separation performance. Finer media captures smaller droplets and handles more stable emulsions, but at the cost of higher pressure drop and greater sensitivity to solids fouling. Coarser media tolerates higher solids loading and operates at lower pressure drop but is limited to coarser droplet sizes.
