
Perforated distribution baffles, also known as calming baffles, are installed downstream of the inlet device in horizontal two-phase and three-phase separators, spanning the entire liquid section. Their function is to dissipate inlet turbulence and ensure uniform liquid distribution across the vessel cross-section, creating stable interface conditions for liquid-liquid separation. Multiple baffles with open area as low as 21% are used depending on separation objectives, cross-sectional velocities, and spacing. Full-diameter configurations address vapor maldistribution where required.

Open area determines the degree of turbulence dissipation and flow restriction the baffle introduces to the liquid section. Lower open area, as low as 21%, provides greater turbulence dissipation and a more uniform liquid velocity profile downstream but increases the differential head across the baffle. Higher open area reduces head loss at the cost of less effective turbulence damping. The correct open area is determined by the inlet device type, cross-sectional liquid velocity, separation efficiency requirements, and available vessel length. When two baffles are used, open area is typically varied between them to achieve progressive turbulence reduction. Two baffles are specified when a single baffle cannot achieve the required interface stability within the available vessel length, or when the inlet turbulence is high enough that a single baffle with the required low open area would create an unacceptable pressure differential. Two baffles with progressively varying open area allow turbulence to be reduced in stages, maintaining acceptable hydraulic conditions while achieving the separation objective. The number of baffles and open area combination is determined by the cross-sectional velocity, separation criticality, and downstream coalescer or mist eliminator requirements.
