The Stokes Coalescer is a corrugated foil liquid-liquid separation device operating on the Stokes Settling principle. Geometry is similar to structured packing, with vertical corrugated sheets providing surface area from 125 to 250 m²/m³ depending on crimp height and angle. Higher surface area than parallel plate coalescers makes it effective for moderate fouling services where a plate pack would blind prematurely.
The smooth, unperforated foil surface minimizes fouling while the corrugated channel geometry reduces the distance dispersed droplets must travel before coalescing, lowering residence time and vessel footprint. Available in metallic alloys and polymers to suit corrosion and temperature requirements. TrayTec supplies and installs Stokes Coalescers to your vessel specification.

The Stokes Coalescer is specified when higher coalescing surface area is needed than a parallel plate pack can provide within the available vessel volume, and when the process stream has a moderate solids content that would not blind the corrugated foil over the design run length. The parallel plate pack is preferred in services with heavier solids loading, where its wider flow channels and simpler geometry resist fouling longer between cleaning cycles. Contact TrayTec with your process fluid properties and solids loading data to confirm which coalescer type is correct for your application.

Stokes Coalescers are available with surface area from 125 m²/m³ to 250 m²/m³, with higher surface area options available for specific requirements. Higher surface area reduces the droplet travel distance, improving separation efficiency and reducing required residence time. However, higher surface area also reduces the open flow area and increases sensitivity to solids fouling. Surface area selection is based on droplet size distribution, flow rates, required effluent quality, and expected solids content. Contact TrayTec with your process data to confirm the correct surface area specification.

Stokes Coalescers are available in a range of metallic alloys including 304 SS, 316 SS, Monel, Alloy 20, duplex stainless, and Hastelloy, as well as polymer options including polypropylene, Dacron, Teflon, and fiberglass. Material selection is driven by the corrosion environment, operating temperature, and compatibility with both the continuous and dispersed liquid phases. Contact TrayTec with your process fluid compositions and operating conditions to confirm the appropriate material of construction.
