The high-capacity sheet metal packing uses curved corrugation angles, approximately 45 degrees through most of the packing layer transitioning to 90 degrees at the top and bottom of each layer. This eliminates the high pressure drop created at the interface between rotated standard packing layers, increasing column capacity by 20 to 30% over standard corrugation geometry at the same bed height and column diameter.

Yes. Structured packing is a common retrofit choice when a column requires increased throughput or improved separation efficiency without modifying the vessel shell. Sheet metal structured packing is the most common retrofit selection for refinery and gas plant columns. Grid packing is specified for retrofit into services where the existing structured packing or random packing is fouling and restricting column operation. Support grids, liquid distributors, and bed limiters must be reviewed and may require replacement as part of the retrofit scope.
