Packing support grids provide the structural foundation for random and structured packing beds inside distillation columns, absorbers, and contactors. Unlike flat plate supports, these grids use an arched or corrugated beam profile that spans the column cross-section, combining high load-bearing capacity with maximum open area for vapor rise and liquid drainage.

A packing support grid is installed at the base of the packed bed and bears the full static weight of the packing, liquid holdup, and any load from the internals above. A bed limiter or hold-down grid is installed at the top of the packed bed and prevents the packing from lifting or fluidizing when vapor velocity is high enough to create an upward force that exceeds the packing weight. Both are required in columns operating at high vapor rates or subject to process upsets that produce sudden velocity surges. The arched profile distributes the packing bed load across the beam span more efficiently than a flat plate, allowing the grid to achieve a higher load rating at a lower material weight. It also positions the vapor rise points at the base of each arch, separating the vapor inlet area from the liquid drainage area and preventing the two-phase interference that flat supports cause at high liquid and vapor loads simultaneously.
