Support grids are structural internals installed inside process columns and vessels to bear the weight of packing beds and catalyst loads while maintaining maximum open area for vapor and liquid flow. Grid geometry, bar spacing, load rating, and material specification are engineered to the specific column diameter, packing type, bed depth, and operating conditions of the application. A correctly specified and installed support grid prevents bed collapse, maintains even flow distribution at the base of the packing, and provides a stable foundation for the internals above.

Support grid selection is governed by the total bed weight including packing, liquid holdup, and any catalyst load above it, as well as the open area required to pass the design vapor and liquid rates without creating a pressure drop penalty at the base of the bed. The grid must span the full column diameter, transfer load to the vessel wall or beam supports, and maintain sufficient open area so it does not become the hydraulic bottleneck in the column.
